Hypersonic weapons have emerged as a reality and a new extreme threat since the world discovered that Russia used the Tsirkon (or Zircon) and Kinzhal hypersonic missiles against Ukraine in 2022 with ranges around 500 to 1.000 km and flying as high as Mach 5 or 6. US and Chinese hypersonic weapons are of course also under developments. These countries and Europe are also designing and testing components and systems for hypersonic gliders and hypersonic aircraft, like the LAPCAT, the Hermius, the X-51 or the Stratofly and other projects. This will be presented in this lecture together with the scientific and technology challenges related to atmospheric flights at these hypersonic speeds and the current developments intended to solve these problems.
